Speaking of Building a Better Bike Lock - Mike Lambourn's SmartLock is a step in the right direction:
From his website:
SmartLock is a cable lock that has cores of compressed air and liquid running through its body. If cut, the liquids spray out over the perpetrator, his tools, the bike and the scene of the crime. A bike that has been stolen will be covered in coloured dye (the dye renders the bike undesirable and therefore unsellable) as well as transluscent Smartwater - an invisible forensic property marking liquid.
I'd want to check the technology out a bit more to make sure there's no way of this pressurized beast exploding on me when I've got the thing in my messenger bag, but hooray for active theft deterrence!
As a followup - Sweet jesus, see also www.bikeoff.org, which I just ran into after poking around his website a bit more. These are some folks I need to get in touch with, pronto.

Skunk like dye spray not withstanding, cable locks are still a bad idea as a primary lock. A friend of mine put together a good strategy page that I think you should share. Link
