Menlo Park police said Thursday they arrested a suspect in connection with a string of high-end bicycle thefts over the past two weeks.Seriously. I'll say it again. If your bike gets stolen, keep an eye on Craigslist.Officers believe 41-year-old James Barry Durr, of San Jose, stole two of the bikes and are investigating whether he participated in any of the other thefts, Menlo Park police spokeswoman Nicole Acker said.
Last month a woman found her stolen black-and-pink Specialized Ruby Comp bicycle, valued at $2,500, advertised on Craigslist and bought it back from a suspect, Acker said. The victim told police what happened but couldn't lead police to the man at that time.
When a second victim reported his Giant Boulder mountain bike stolen July 30, officers searched for it on Craigslist and arranged to meet Durr in a public library parking lot that evening, Acker said.
Once there, the undercover officers noted that a serial number on the merchandise matched that of the stolen bicycle and arrested Durr, she said. The female victim later picked Durr out of a lineup, Acker added.
Also amusing: Christian Bradbury and John Price are FUCKING BIKE THIEVES over at atxbs.com. Two Austin-area bike thieves, caught red-handed, and the atxbs folks are giving them the humiliation treatment. Good times!
